Resetting Blog Widget

Hi all! I haven't been ignoring you, I'm just really busy writing...That's right *snort*, I'm a writer (among other things). But that's not why I'm posting today. I usually don't post about how to do something unless I've actually tried it myself, and understand how it works.

So today I'm going to show you how to reset the Blog post element. Okay, I know you're asking why in the world would you want to do that? Well there could be a couple of reasons. Like if you comment link at the bottom of the post disappears, or the posts won't show...or anything major malfunction of any other part of that particular widget.

Now...going back to the comment thing for a minute. If your comment link is not showing on your blog posts, check out these three things first to make sure that all of your settings are correct:

Post Options in post editor...the box at the bottom of the rectangle post box that you write in....click on 'Post Options' and make sure comments are allowed.

Settings - Comment tab...on the Settings tab, go to comments and make sure they are set to "Show".

Template - Page Elements - Blog post...and lastly go to your Layout(Template), go to Page Elements, then click on the edit box in the Blog Post element...hint:(it will be the biggest on the page). When the Configure box opens up, make sure comments are checked.

Okay, after all that your @#%$# comment link is still not showing...LOL...chill! We can fix it.

LOL...we're going to play in your template HTML...wheeee!

Go to Template...Edit HTML...scroll down in the code until you find this piece of code (the black highlighted section):
Okay, select it like I did and cut that puppy out of there. Save the piece in your mouse because you're gonna put it back in a few minutes. And remember where it was, so that you can put it back in the exact same place...LOL! If you're anal retentive like me...copy a whole section of the template...like say five lines before and after the section you're going to cut out and save it on a Notepad page ore WORD page...just so you can see the exact spot to put it back!

Okay...I digress...cut that highlighted section out of the template and click save...it will be fine...go ahead...click!

Now...this page pops up:" Warning Will Robinson, Warning...LOL...just kidding, I'm a Lost In Space addict! Anyhow...the page says...Egads, you're about to delete a widget!...LOL...never fear...click that Confirm and Save...with pride!

Okay now that you've deleted the bad bugger, you're going to reset the widget by scrolling down the template to the spot where you deleted the piece of code that is still in your mouse...Remember up above I told you to remember where you took it out of...another thing that you could do to remember the spot, before you take the piece out hit your Enter key a few times before and after the section, LOL...it will leave a big hole in the template, that will be easy to find!

Okay...mouse pointer in the empty spot...right click...paste....put that baby back and hit Save.

TaDa!!!! You're all better now, the Blog widget has been reset!

I like the way you write and explain things. I chose to use the classic template when I started my blog, so I am guessing this is yet another thing I cannot do...

You are correct my dear...but this is also something you will NOT need to do...LOL...the Classic templates can't get this particular corruption!

I am not understanding what you mean by "I can't do anything with it."

Do you mean that you can't get into it?

Are you using, or were you using Gmail?

If you can't get into it, you can't delete it anyhow.

If you have been blogging for some time, you have developed pagerank, and a following. If you delete the blog you will be starting from scratch.

Charles, this isn't a widget "check". You have to follow the steps, delete the widget. Save it and then, re-add the widget.

Just out of curiosity, how could deleting html content and adding it back solve the problem?? Or am I asking a little more technical detail :-)
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
LOL...the answer isn't really that technical. Sometimes the black hole of cyberspace will change the translation of a piece of code. It could even go so far as misidentify a character.

Once that happens, it is always translated with the misrepresentation. What you're literally doing is making the computer re-issue the code in its correct format :-)

    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
No Racing...that will not help you. The image isn't showing up because it is too large for the space you want to put it in. Sometimes even if you use the "resize to fit" button, if the image is way larger it won't shrink itself enough to fit.

Look at your template to get the size of your header and then reduce the image to that size, and it should work fine!

You have moderation enabled. Lately there have been quite a few people having problems with losing comments because of it. Mine says "yes" because I do not have moderation enabled.

Your blog seems rather lovely. Why do you need moderation? The comments should automatically come to you anyhow, even with moderation turned off..if you filled in your email address in the box at the bottom of the "Comments" section in your SetUp tab.

that way you could delete any stray comments that you didn't like, but all the rest would show up.

btw...when you delete a comment, check the "remove it forever" box below the delete button, and it won't leave that stupid "Comment removed by moderator thing".

    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
Hi Angelus, I would venture to guess that your template is not a new Blogger XML template and that is why things look different.

Solutions listed for Blogger only work, for the most part...on their templates, not custom ones...or classic ones.

    Hi Bonnie,

Thank you so much for your tutorial...but I'm still having problems. I checked all my settings, and I removed the widget, 3 times. I have two blank spaces where my time stamp and my comments links are supposed to be. I don't know how to fix this. I am using the minima template. And I got a code for the tink bg off of jellypages. I would be so greatly appreciative if you could look at my blog and tell me what you think. Its sexytink23.blogspot.com.

I tried posting in the group posting but I couldn't even do that (I'm very new to blogger.)

    Thank you for your help.

Ashley, the problem appears to be with the code you got from jellypages. it is overriding the Mimima format. You will have to get Jellypages to help or pick another template.

    Hi Bonnie,
Here is my blog page. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Colleen, you don't have a ton of widgets to have to replicate, just try reloading the template again. Go to the pick a new template page, and click another. See if that one gets the comments, then click and put that one back, and see if that will reset it.
    Colleen said...
    Hi Bonnie,
I tried you suggestion of changing the template and switching back, still didn't see where I could add comments to the page.
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
LOL...now this is messing with me!

Install another template, and leave it there till you tell me so I can go look at a new one.
    Colleen said...
Bonnie - new template in place. Good luck!!
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
    I'm going to look
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
Okay...this is officially freaking me out...that and the fact the my profile pix is MIA.

Did you check all the comment places in your Settings? Are you sure, because for it to do this it has to be being controled by your DAshboard.
    Colleen said...
Can you send me the list of where I need to check the comment is on? I have checked twice but can do it one more time.
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
On the Comments tab under Settings,

    Comments - Show
    Who Can Comment - Anyone
Comment Placement Form - Full Page
Comment Default for Posts - New Posts Have comments

Those should be the important ones right now.
    Colleen said...
I switched to full page, hopefully that works
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
Now make a new post...even if you only say a few words. We want to see what happens.
    Colleen said...
i think it worked, the "comments" shows up on the new post. I am guessing it will not show up on the past posts correct?
Thanks for your help, you are wonderful at getting back to those of us how are lost in this world!!!
    Best wishes
    Colleen
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
    I left you a comment...LOL...

You have moderation turned on. Did you make sure to put you email address in the box below the moderation part, so that you get emails when a comment comes in that needs to be moderated?
    Leopoldo Gómez said...
Bonnie, I did follow your instructions, however I can't see the comments in my page. Help, please.
    Leo

Open your post box where you create a post. At the bottom of the box, it says post options...open that and make sure you have comments enabled.

Then from your Dashboard, go to Settings, then click on the Commments tab.

Make sure you have these settings:

    Comments - Show
    Who Can Comment - Anyone
Comment Placement Form - Full Page
Comment Default for Posts - New Posts Have comments

Those should be the important ones right now.

Now go make a new post, even if it's only a few words...and see if you get a comment link for it!
    Leopoldo Gómez said...
Thanks Bonnie, but it didn't show.(?)
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...

    Refresh your browser. It worked!

    Hello!
Please help me changing the text in the "send button" so instead fo saying "Publish comment", it only say "OK" or whatever. I've been searching and searching without results.
    Thanks!

    NO!

Don't be screwing around with something you don't understand or you'll render your template unuseable!

Hello. I don't know where to ask this because I didn't see a section for it...but I've been trying to load a video for days now (really, days!) and this time I got an error message instead of it just bleeping out. But it didn't say what the error was, just that there was an error uploading it.
I have loaded short videos a number of times with no problem. This one is longer, but within the space parameters. Any ideas?
    Thanks! MJ (islandwomanculebra.blogspot.com)

I love you! Thank you for being the only sane voice I've encountered in fixing this problem. I've been going crazy trying to fix this for months! And yes, this can happen to the classic template. Thank you! Thank you!

OH MY GOD. Ive been looking for this "help kit" since May and now it's June. Hahaha! I just cannot understand other sites on how to put the "comment" link below my entries.. They are complicated, I really like how you give instructions/steps. Haha! Funny :D Thank you so much :) Take care! WEEEEE~

Errr... i have no idea whether you are still even looking at the comments to this post, but I'm trying just in case :-)
A template I used seems to have some kind of built-in comment problem - the comment link is there, but clicking it doesn't do anything. The code doesn't contain the section that you suggest to replace in your guide to resetting the widget, either.... If you have any suggestions they would be sooooooo welcome - as is everything else that you already do!
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
    LOL...I'm always here!

Where is the template that you are using? It may be a thrid party template that didn't have comments enabled on it.

i found something similar, but i'm afraid to cut that out.
    any help?
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
Always be sure to back up your template on your hard drive before you start messing with it.

Are you using a Blogger template or a thrid-party template?
    Farmchicked said...
    third party template.

i think i might just find a new template on blogger
    Bonnie S. Calhoun said...
That might be a better bet. Third party templates can be kinda tricky to fix...depending on how they were written.
